The Isles of Billy Hephaestus

Description

When you name a creature after the God of the Forge... You know that it is something to be feared. Hephaestus are one of a few 'God tier' creatures on The Isles, with another God tier creature (The Poseidon, to be exact) ruling it's watery home in the Billynian Sea. Likewise, Hephaestus rules the land, competing with the Land Goblin sharks, the infamous Psychotherium and the Collared Xenoceropts. Only one predator can hope to successfully come on top with this giant beetle: The Trapjaw. The adaptations that these insects have evolved to combat the various predators on The Archipelago are... Unique. For most of their long lifespans, they travel in small family groups, with the males at the top and females their servants. During these 50 or so years, the groups travel the Main Isle and work together in order to take down Billies, Harolds and other large creatures. They also scavenge the corpses of beached Terfish, Inkies and Aspidochelon. Occasionally, they can be seen hunting Psychotherium, and their hunting methods involve mass confusion of their targets until at least one of the Hephaestus members bashes in the skull of the Hexatheriid, killing said predator instantly. In the last 5 years of their life, though, they do something... Very atypical of the beetle order: the groups of Hephaestus that have survived the 50 year wait soon merge together, forming a massive, moving colony akin to that of an Army Ant's, with the males now at the bottom and all but one female now dead. These colonies soon consume anything in their paths, with their former prey items the Billies and Harolds soon fleeing into the ocean... Now, the predators of the islands are now walking buffets. This is only for five years. And after this period of chaos, the Billies and Harolds return, and the massive armies of Hephaestus... Die from senescence. For the next five years afterward, the corpses of these massive beetles soon wash into the ocean, starting a mass feeding frenzy of the Inkies, Terfish and Bruces. Truly one of the more unique members of The Isles.
